At present, there are three ways to produce phosphorus trichloride as belows.
a. Produce phosphorus trichloride through a series of reactions of phosphorus ore and chlorine.
b. Aerate chlorine into melted yellow phosphorus.
c. Aerate chlorine into liquid yellow phosphorus that is dissolved in phosphorus trichloride solution first.
The third method is widely used because of its simplified production process, easily controlled reactions and low investment needed. It has been widely adopted in most countries for more than 30 years, bringing about large yellow phosphorus consumption in phosphorus trichloride.
