On May 15, a team of 41 people with 13 large-scale modern engineering vehicles was sent by CNPC Chuanqing Drilling & Exploration Corporation to the town of Guanzhuang in Qingchuan County to take part in "quake lake" relief work.

Located among mountains, Guanzhuang was one of the worst-hit areas in the May 12 earthquake. Triggered by mountain landslides and mud-rock flows, a "quake lake" was formed as rocks and mud blocked a river. The lake is 30 meters wide, 20 meters deep and 10 kilometers long. An emergency path was urgently needed to evacuate tens of thousands of victims and more than 20 rescue teams from Guanzhuang in case the lake bursts its banks.

For 10 days, despite the risk of aftershocks, the ground cracking and mountain collapses, the CNPC rescue team's cranes, excavators and loaders operated in turns around the clock. Finally, an emergency evacuation path measuring 730 meters long and 15 meters wide was cleared from among the debris.
