Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Zhang Taolin met Xavier Lazo, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Ecuador, in Beijing on Dec. 2. Both sides exchanged views on deepening bilateral cooperation in agriculture.

Zhang noted that positive progress has been made in China-Ecuador agricultural cooperation in recent years due to joint efforts. The agricultural cooperation mechanism has been established, agricultural S&T cooperation has been steadily advanced, and agricultural trade is booming. In 2018, China-Ecuador agricultural trade totaled $790 million, up 113.5% year on year. In the first nine months of 2019, trade value have already amounted to $1.6 billion.

China and Ecuador are highly complementary in agriculture. Therefore there is vast potential for developing bilateral agricultural cooperation. Zhang suggested that the two sides should strengthen the mechanism of China-Ecuador Joint Committee on Agriculture, deepen agricultural S&T cooperation, jointly create a favorable business environment, as well as expand agricultural investment and trade in order to achieve mutual benefits and win-win cooperation.

Lazo spoke highly of the achievements in agricultural cooperation between China and Ecuador, and expressed the willingness to work with China to promote bilateral agricultural cooperation.
