Cumulative price of sugar in Chinese key enterprises reaches USD745.76t by May

According to data collected by the China Sugar Association, by the end of May 2019, key enterprises in China have processed 82.638 million tonnes of sugar crops, with the cumulative sugar yield of 9.612 million tonnes. The cumulative sales volume of sugar by the end of May was 5.781 million tonnes with 60.15% of the total inventory already sold. In comparison, 53.48% of the total sugar inventory was sold by the end of May in 2018. The cumulative average selling price of white sugar was USD 745.76/t (RMB 5.138/t), decreased by USD 111.91/t (RMB 771/t) year-over-year, by the end of May in 2019, while the cumulative selling price of white sugar during the same period last year was RMB 5.909/t.


The cumulative average selling price of beet sugar was USD 743/t (RMB 5,119/t), decreased by USD 142.97/t (RMB 985/t) year-over-year, by the end of May in 2019, down from RMB 6104/t by the end in 2018; and cane sugar was USD 746.05/t (RMB 5,140/t), decreased by USD 107.84/t (RMB 743/t) year over year in 2019, down from RMB 5189/t in 2018.  Key enterprises sold a total of 862.5 thousand tonnes of sugar in May 2019, among which the average selling price of white sugar, beet sugar and cane sugar was RMB 5191/t, RMB 5240/t, and RMB 5189/t respectively.


The import of sugar in China from 2015 to 2019 falling, export rising

According to the data shown on the website of China Sugar Association, the import volume of sugar presented a downward trend from 2015 to 2017. The volume of sugar import was 1.78 million tonnes from January to August in 2018, which is an increase of 6.6% compared to the same period last year. The export volume of sugar grew steadily from 2015 to 2017 and the volume of sugar export was 122 thousand tonnes, an increase of 38.1%.


The China Sugar Association shows on its website that the cumulative import volume of sugar was 930 thousand tonnes from January to May in 2019, which was 170 thousand tonnes less than last year during the same period, a decrease of 15.45%; the cumulative export volume of sugar was 69.2 thousand tonnes, which decreased 2.2 thousand tonnes compared to the same period last year, a reduction of 3.08%. By the end of June in 2019, the cumulative sale volume of sugar was 7.6129 million tonnes, while the cumulative sale volume of was 6.5065 million tonnes during the same period last year. The cumulative sale volume of sugar at that time was 70.75%, up from 63.11% during the same period last year. Among them, beet sugar was sold 6.531 million tonnes by the end of May in 2019, up from 5.514 million tonnes during the same period in 2018. Cane sugar was sold 992.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 with a sale rate of 60.19%, and was sold 1.082 million tonnes in 2019 with a sale rate of 86.39%.

Sugar is commonly used as the general term of white sugar, brown sugar and crystal sugar. Cane sugar is the constituent of three of them. Sugar is one of the important sauces of nutrition in human bodies. The energy which is generated after sugar is oxidized sustains the human metabolism.  About 70% of energy that the body needs comes from sugar, so it is essential for people to replenish sugar in their daily lives. Sugar is primarily produced in two ways: the traditional method of decoction as well as modern industrial processing.
