EU feed manufacturers press for policy change on anti-GM stance
The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (Fefac) recently said that the industry, livestock producers and public authorities need to re-assess EU's zero tolerance on GM.
Fefac president, Pedro Correa de Barros, said that EU needs to cross the line by adapting business models and policy approaches to provide safe but affordable foodstuffs to consumers.
Correa de Barros added that in the face of rocketing and volatile raw material prices all sectors must have a close look on long-term conditions to aid EU livestock producers to remain competitive.
The EU can no longer afford to apply double standards for its own producers over imported products, he added.
Fefac welcomes the EU Commission's plan to fix a practical low level presence threshold for not yet approved GM products before the summer.
